Welcome to Quickie, the podcast that shoots straight from the lip.
My name is Nevena and each episode I sit down and talk shop with inspiring and dynamic women. Celebrating their stories, successes, and experiences.
If you’re joining me for the first time, pull up a pew; for today I’m blessed with the presence of Brooke Powers, is known to many across Australia as a DJ, club organiser, community leader, drug law reform advocate, and nightlife icon.
In a few very short years since completing her Bachelor of Dance, Brooke credits one very magical moment in the club when she felt the music in her body as a physicality, as the flashpoint of her musical journey.
She manifested that feeling into a self-taught DJ career that has seen her perform at Golden Plains, Paradise and Dark Mofo’s ‘Transliminal’ event.
Her DJ sets, inspired by queerness, sex, drugs, and feminism, are crafted to keep you lifted on the dance floor til the sun is shining. And I can attest to the fact that they absolute do.
A woman of many Powers, Brooke has appeared in the seminal TV web series Trash Slags, alongside yours truly, has worked with the Victorian AIDs Council Equinox Clinic, and spoke openly as a person who uses drugs in the The Hack’s “Australians On Drugs” TV special.
In 2017, she and long time collaborator and friend Wheat began ‘Spank’ a night billed as a club with “No acoustic intros, no time wasting, no late starts.” It’s wild.
She has style, she has flare, she’s everywhere, that’s how she became, the Brooke.
